Carya illionensis Pawnee - Pecan tree Pawnee
Height: 0,6–0,8 m
The pecan is a deciduous tree that grows to a height of about 6-9m. The crown can reach a width of 6m. It grows slowly, is undemanding, and is easy to grow. Self-fertile. It prefers a sunny spot and well-structured, fertile soil. Water needs are high. Its leaves are winged and compound, green, and in autumn turn shades of yellow and brown. The pecan nuts are oval-oblong with a thin shell. They ripen in early October, but can be picked once the outer husk opens. Unlike walnuts, they are not attacked by the walnut husk fly ( Rhagoletis completa). Its nutritional value is high; it is a good source of vitamins (vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin B) and minerals (magnesium, potassium, zinc). Its fruit is similar to the walnut, tasty and buttery, and can be used to make all kinds of dishes. It can be planted as a specimen tree in larger gardens.
